Turkey & Pumpkin Pie Are Healthy Choices For Your Teeth

It’s pretty safe to say the words Thanksgiving and Healthy don’t pair up when you think about the delicious foods flowing around the table on Turkey Day.  But, believe it or not, you’ll have reason to feel less guilty when you indulge in the feast this season because of the benefits some of these traditional foods will have on your teeth.

October Celebrates Orthodontics


When you think October, you naturally think Halloween. But did you know that October is also a time for celebrating Orthodontics? Every year, the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recognizes October as a time to raise awareness of the benefits of orthodontic treatment.

In a month full of sweet treats, it’s more important than ever to be mindful of your braces and/or your orthodontic appliances. Try to avoid hard and sticky candy. As always, remember to brush and floss after eating sugary foods. Exposing your teeth to sweets increases your risk for cavities and allowing sugar to sit on your teeth can lead to decalcification (permanent white discoloration of the teeth).

If you do indulge in sweets, do so in moderation. Avoid the temptation to grab another handful from the bowl filled with candy. Parents may want to limit the time during which children can eat Halloween candy, whether they are in orthodontic treatment or not. Tasty alternatives include soft chocolates, peanut butter cups or other melt-in-your-mouth varieties.

As we celebrate Orthodontic Health Month, we have to take the time to acknowledge another health effort focused on creating health awareness, Breast Cancer Awareness.

Breast Cancer is the most common of cancers affecting women in the US, and second leading cause of death. However, Breast Cancer also affects men. Breast Cancer is a malignant tumor that forms in breast cells. A malignant tumor is a group of cancer cells that have the ability to grow and spread.

Facts about Breast Cancer:
  • One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.
  • Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women.
  • Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death among women.
  • Each year it is estimated that over 220,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 will die.
  • Although breast cancer in men is rare, an estimated 2,150 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and approximately 410 will die each year.

A Clean Mouth Is A Healthy Mouth


Having braces provides additional nooks and crannies where food particles and bacteria can hide. Plaque and tartar can form around your brackets and bands which can lead to cavities. What can you do to make sure you protect your teeth? Visit your dentist. Having your teeth professionally cleaned can help ensure that plaque and tartar are removed. 

Orthodontists and dentists specialize in different things, but work as a team for you and your oral health. Your orthodontist is not in charge of cleaning your teeth or checking for cavities, tooth decay and gum disease. And because it is much more difficult to keep your mouth clean while appliances and wires are in place you still need to see your dentist at least twice a year. 


So without regular dental examinations and necessary treatment, it is possible to end up with straight teeth and good bite, but with decayed teeth and unhealthy gums. And who wants that?

Remember, you can still get cavities when you are wearing braces so always brush your teethfor two minutes twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, floss daily and eat healthy.

Pool Side Protection..For Your Teeth

One sure way to beat the heat cool and have fun is by hopping into the swimming pool. But did you know those dips into the pool could be harming your teeth? Read more to find out how.

Studies done over the years have presented evidence that swimming in the pool can damage tooth enamel. The damage is called enamel erosion, which is caused by chlorine. Chlorine is a chemical used to keep pool water clean. However, this bacterium killing chemical is highly acidic and over time will start to erode your teeth. Tooth erosion is caused by acid dissolving the surface of the teeth. Teeth can repair themselves with minerals in saliva, but too much exposure too often will cause the erosion to begin. The eroded teeth become extra sensitive, thin and are more likely to decay. In addition to erosion posing a threat, teeth can come stained a tinted yellow by chlorine.

How you can protect your teeth:

  • Make sure your pool is properly maintained
  • Purchase inexpensive pH strips to check balance of pool water
  • Try to keep water out of your mouth while swimming
  • Do not brush right after swimming, with soft enamel you could be brushing enamel way

Fourth of July is right around the corner and this means flags waving and fireworks blazing the sky, with all the excitement surrounding this holiday it's important to keep you and your family safe. Here are a few tips:

Leave Fireworks to the Professionals

  • The best way to protect your family is to not use any fireworks at home. Instead, attend public fireworks displays and leave the lighting to the professionals.
  • If you plan to use fireworks, make sure they are legal in your area.

Be Extra Careful With Sparklers

  • Little arms are too short to hold sparklers, which can heat up to 1,200 degrees. How about this? Let your young children use glow sticks instead. They can be just as fun but they don’t burn at a temperature hot enough to melt glass.
  • Closely supervise children around fireworks at all times.

Take Necessary Precautions

  • Do not wear loose clothing while using fireworks.
  • Never light fireworks indoors or near dry grass.
  • Point fireworks away from homes, and keep away from brush, leaves and flammable substances

Be Prepared for an Accident or Injury

  • Stand several feet away from lit fireworks. If a device does not go off, do not stand over it to investigate it. Put it out with water and dispose of it.
  • Always have a bucket of water and/or a fire extinguisher nearby. Know how to operate the fire extinguisher properly.
  • If a child is injured by fireworks, immediately go to a doctor or hospital. If an eye injury occurs, don't allow your child to touch or rub it, as this may cause even more damage.

Here's the truth are some very common myths. 

Myth: Only children and teens need to visit an orthodontist. 


Legit: Braces are not just for kids. More and more adults today are seeking the benefits of a beautiful, healthy smile.

Myth: Braces are just for cosmetic purposes and aren’t necessary for your overall dental health.
Legit: While braces can definitely help you get that beautiful smile, they aren’t just for cosmetic improvement. Well aligned teeth can facilitate good oral hygiene making it easier to prevent tooth
decay and gum disease. In addition, resolving certain orthodontic problems with the use of braces can improve your ability to speak, chew, and even breathe.

Myth: Braces interfere with radio signals and electronic devices.

In order for these transmitted signals to travel well in air, they must be sent at high-frequencies. This is achieved through modulation. Even if someone's tooth could receive these frequencies, it would have to be decoded to actually hear real messages.

Myth: Wearing braces will increase your chances of being struck by lightning?
Legit: The chances of a person getting struck by are the same, with or without braces. In the U.S. in any one year, the chance you will be struck by lighting is 1 in 700,000 no matter what you are wearing.

Myth: If there was a giant magnet overhead, anyone who is wearing braces would get stuck to it.
Legit: Braces are made of materials which are non-magnetic in nature. Therefore getting stuck to a giant magnet is highly unlikely...and really, where is this giant magnet anyways?

Well…”They" are those doctors …so it’s probably safe to say that we can trust them. When they say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, it’s because eating breakfast not only provides you with the energy you need for a productive day, but it is also essential to your overall health. While adults need to eat breakfast each day to perform at their best, kids need it even more. Children's bodies are growing and developing, breakfast is important to the growing process. For those reason are why breakfast has been named the most important meal of the day.

Here are 5 tips for implementing breakfast into your morning routine:

  • Purchase portable breakfast items such as fruit, yogurt or breakfast bars.
  • Get up 10-15 minutes earlier than you usually do in the morning to eat breakfast. Waking up earlier will allow you to make sure you have time to set and eat in the morning. And when you think about it…15 minutes is not that big of a deal, it’s like 1 less hit of the snooze button.

  • Replace drinking a cup of coffee with drinking a glass of milk or orange juice as both are proven to provide natural energy.
  •  Offer kids who don’t feel like eating in the morning,a glass of milk mixed with an instant breakfast drink or a fruit smoothie.
  • Choosing cereals that are 100 percent whole grain and lightly sweetened or low-sugar – no more than 10 grams of sugar per serving, this increases the health benefits of eating cereal. However, you can use fresh fruits to provide a hint of sweetness.

Lock it Down

You’ve just gotten your taken braces off and your smile looks awesome! Now, if you want to keep that super straight, amazing smile you are going to need to make sure you wear your retainer.

We know you know this…the braces come of, the retainer goes on. But we can’t stress it enough. If you don’t wear your retainer as prescribed, your teeth are going to move out of alignment and back into their original, crooked places…just as if you never even had braces at all.

Here’s something you may not know… your teeth aren't set rigidly into your jawbone like you might think. They are held in place by bands of fibrous tissue called the periodontal ligaments. After your teeth have been moved into their ideal position by your braces and/or other orthodontic appliances, it takes time for the periodontal ligaments to adjust. When you’re not wearing your retainer, pressure from your lips and tongue can cause your teeth to shift. Even if your teeth and smile don’t look like they are moving, that doesn’t mean they haven’t. If you go without wearing your retainer for long periods of time, your teeth will continue to move until misalignment is visibly noticeable, and that crooked smile you thought was a thing of the past is back again.

So, if you don’t wear your retainer as prescribed, your nice straight teeth won’t be nice and straight for long. And we know you didn’t go through orthodontic treatment just for fun.

Protect Your Smile!

Each year during the month of April the Academy for Sports Dentistry, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the American Dental Association, the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and the American Association of Orthodontists sponsor National Facial Protection Month.

National Facial Protection Month focuses on spreading awareness about the importance of protecting children and adults from oral and facial injuries. Many injuries that do occur during sporting activities could have been prevented had the proper protective gear had been worn. An estimated 12 million people between the ages of 5 and 22 years suffer a sport-related injury annually. A recently published study by the University of Alabama at Birmingham analyzed data from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS), a database of injuries treated at hospital emergency departments, for the period 2001-2008. Researchers found the five most common causes of childhood injuries were, in order of frequency, basketball, football, bicycling, playgrounds and soccer.

For our patients we want to remind you that it is important for you to protect your mouth during treatment. For protection you must wear a mouth guard. A mouth guard can help prevent injury to the teeth, mouth and even jaw. Mouth guards are made of flexible material that is fitted to protect yourupper and lower teeth. You can buy a stock mouth guard or get a custom guard made. The right fit mouth guard will act as cushions protecting your mouth from hits and preventing serious injury.

NO Pain NO Gain

When thinking about orthodontic treatment the first question people usually have is, "Will it hurt?”. There seems to be a common fear among everyone with regards to the pain orthodontic treatment might bring. Well Dr. Wilmot has some good news! Orthodontic treatment is not as bad as you think it is.

Orthodontic treatment has improved dramatically over the years. But as a general rule, initially, braces do make your teeth tender and sore for the first few days after having them placed. But the soreness is not unbearable. The slight soreness you feel comes from the fact that your teeth are beginning to move and they are not used to the pressure the arch wire and brackets are causing. As time goes by, your teeth will get use to the braces and your soreness will go away.

It is important to know that today’s braces are more comfortable than ever. But if you still think braces might hurt more than we are letting on, here are a few tips that will help reduce any soreness you may feel:

  •     Take an over the counter medicine...like Advil. 
  •     Rinse your mouth with warm salt water. 
  •     Eat soft foods like yogurt and mash potatoes. 
  •     Place heating pad or warm was rag on jaw. 
  •     Avoid acidic drinks; those drinks with acid can irritate a sore mouth. 
  •     Use over the counter oral anesthetic like Orajel. 
  •     Apply wax to any bracket or wire bothering your cheek, tongue or lips.

3 Reasons to Change Out Your Old Toothbrush

The toothbrush is your number one oral hygiene accessory. Toothbrushes help keep your teeth and mouth clean, but how long should you a keep a toothbrush?



Dr. Wilmot recommends that you switch out that old toothbrush for a fresh new one ever 3 to 4 months. Replacing your toothbrush is essential since they are constantly being exposed to germs and bacteria. If you notice the bristles of your tooth brush have become worn that's a clear sign...you need a new toothbrush. Those of you who wear braces should change their toothbrushes frequently because braces break down and fracture bristles which makes the toothbrush lose its effectiveness.

It's helpful to keep a pack of toothbrushes available in the house at all times for easy replacement.
So mark those calendars for every 3 to 4 months and it’s out with the old and in with the new.

After reading the above you're probably thinking…”My toothbrush is fine, I have it broken in just the way I like it.” And maybe that’s true, but did you know that your old toothbrush could actually be harming your mouth?

3 Reasons to Change Out Your Old Toothbrush:

janice wilmot1. Bacteria - Your toothbrush is a tool for removing bacteria from your teeth…but it doesn’t actually kill bacteria. Some of the bacteria from your teeth stay on your toothbrush after you are done brushing. Now, this isn’t a problem initially, but imagine three to four months of bacteria build up on your toothbrush. That old bacteria ridden toothbrush is in your mouth at least twice a day…yuck.
2. Bristles - Like any tool, a toothbrush wears down. Worn bristles are tough on your enamel and can wear it away over time. Not only that… an old, worn toothbrush can be up to 95 percent less effective at removing plaque.
3. Illness - Always change your toothbrush after you’ve been sick, even if it’s not “technically” time to switch out your toothbrush. Do we need to say it again? Germs and bacteria in your mouth twice a day, every day.

Feel like changing your toothbrush every three months is wasteful? We’ve got a solution. Put that old toothbrush to work doing odd jobs around the house. Just 2 Minutes 2 times a Day

Seeking orthodontic treatment is a great way to make sure your oral health is in good shape. However, there are other factors that affect the status of healthy teeth. Brushing, flossing and eating habits are just as important. 




When treating your teeth Dr. Wilmot and her staff want to be sure they are working with healthy teeth...and developing healthy habits start at a young age.

Did you know that the baby teeth that appear in the first 3 years of a child's life have been there since birth, in the baby’s jawbones? Those baby teeth are key for chewing, speaking and appearance. They also hold space in the jaws for upcoming adult teeth. Even though they fall out, baby teeth are important and you need to take good care of them.

In an effort to help Keep Kids' Mouth's Healthy, The Ad Council has started the 2min2x Children's Oral Health Campaign. For healthier teeth, good breath and fewer cavities kids need to remember to brush their teeth for 2 minutes, twice a day. Adopting these healthy brushing habits can help save children from a lifetime of tooth pain.

Helpful Brushing Tips

    Brush with a fluoride toothpaste.
    Place the toothbrush at an angle against the gums.
    Make sure to move the toothbrush back and forth, gently, in short strokes.
    Brush the tongue to remove germs and freshen breath.

Be Kind To Your Braces


Braces are used as a treatment to bring out your best smile. And with that comes a lot of changes to your mouth including your daily oral hygiene activities and eating habits.

While you have braces you will want to avoid certain types of foods…basically anything sticky, chewy, hard and crunchy. Here’s a list of treats you will need to avoid during your braces treatment:
  • Gum
  • Hard Candy
  • Sticky Candy
  • Popcorn
  • Nuts
  • Ice
  • Taffy
  • Hard Chips
  • Carrots
  • Apples
  • Hard/Thick Bread
  • Large/Hard Pretzels
  • Corn on a cob
It is important to not consume these foods, because eating anything sticky, chewy, hard or crunchy can damage your braces which could make your treatment longer than expected.
We want you to have the best experience during your treatment. So…here’s a list of great foods you can enjoy while wearing braces.

  • Dairy - pudding, soft cheeses
  • Breads – sliced lunch bread, soft tortillas, pancakes, muffins w/o nuts, biscuits
  • Grains – noodles, pasta, soft-cooked rice
  • Meats/poultry - soft-cooked chicken, meatballs, lunch meats
  • Seafood - fish w/o bones, tuna, salmon, crab and crab cakes
  • Vegetables - mashed potatoes, peas, yams, steamed spinach, beans
  • Fruits - applesauce, bananas, fruit juice
  • Treats - ice cream w/o nuts, milkshakes, smoothies, Jell-O, cake
  • Other – eggs, hot dogs, hamburgers, chili, beans and much more
Remember with braces, always be mindful of what you are eating, the wrong food can lead to a sooner than expected visit to our office.

Learning to Love Your New Smile

Every relationship takes work, even the relationship between you and your Braces.


You and your braces will become besties over the upcoming months.  There will be some bad days, but there will be good days too. And if you stick with it and work through those bad days, the good days will be that much better.

To prevent any ill feelings between you and your braces we recommend...

Avoiding sticky or hard foods. You don’t want to do anything that could cause your bestie harm. And even though it may seem like the best foods are the foods that are sticky and/or hard…sticky or hard foods can break a bracket or wire.

Chewing with your back teeth. Taking a large bite of food with your front teeth can leave your braces vulnerable to damage. Cut large foods into pieces and use your back teeth to chew.

Flossing. We know that it can be a pain to floss around your braces…your braces may even fight you on it.  But flossing is the best way to prevent gum disease and other oral health problems. If you find flossing with braces difficult, don’t give up on it. There are tools that can help. Ask us about Floss Threaders. Floss Threaders definitely make flossing with braces much easier.

Smoothing things over. When you first get your braces, sore spots may develop on your cheeks. To protect your cheeks, place wax on the bracket or wire. Rinsing with warm salt water several times a day is also very soothing to your gum and cheek tissues. Don’t worry…the soreness from your braces won’t last long, so try your best not to get mad at your braces. 

You and your braces will go through a lot together. When all is said and done, you’ll smile at yourself in the mirror one day, remembering your braces fondly and you'll know that the relationship was totally worth it.

Healthy Teeth Make Smiles Beauitful

You just got your braces on and you have been keeping your regularly scheduled orthodontic appointments, so why oh why would you still need to visit your Dentist?

Orthodontists and dentists specialize in different things, but work as a team for you and your oral health. Dr. Wilmot is not in charge of cleaning your teeth or checking for cavities, tooth decay and gum disease. And because it is much more difficult to keep your mouth clean while appliances and wires are in place…you still need to see your dentist every six months. That means twice a year you should be attending scheduled dentist appointments.


Having braces provides additional nooks and crannies where food particles and bacteria can hide. Plaque and tartar can form around your brackets and bands which can lead to cavities. Having your teeth professionally cleaned can help ensure that plaque and tartar are removed.

Visiting your dentist regularly will also help protect your teeth from decalcification. Decalcification is a condition in which white spots form on your tooth surfaces and decalcification is irreversible.

So without regular dental examinations and necessary treatment, it is possible to end up with straight teeth and good bite, but with decayed teeth and unhealthy gums. And who wants that?

Remember…You can still get cavities when you are wearing braces so always brush your teeth for two minutes twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and to floss daily.

Fourteen is the New Seven

It seems like braces and teenagers go together like peanut butter and jelly. But did you know that children should really be seen by an Orthodontist as early as age seven for an evaluation?



We know...seven sounds crazy and way too early to be thinking about braces. However, early diagnosis and treatment by Dr. Wilmot can help guide facial development and tooth eruption, thereby preventing more serious problems from occurring later in your child's life. And treating children during these early growth stages allows Dr. Wilmot to achieve results that may not be possible once facial bones have fully developed.


A check-up may reveal that your child’s bite is fine. Or it may determine that early treatment is indicated to prevent or intercept more serious problems from developing as Dr. Wilmot can detect
subtle problems with jaw growth and emerging teeth while some baby teeth are still present. While your child’s teeth may appear to be straight, there could be a problem that only Dr. Wilmot can detect.

Through an early orthodontic evaluation, you will be giving your child the best opportunity for a beautiful, healthy smile.

Now...don't worry if your child is older than seven...it's not too late for a check-up, especially if you or your family dentist notice a problem.
